Check out this link to a whole list of free books on Linux and Programming related topics collected together by the folks over at mixeduperic.com.  There are some really nice books there.  All of them should be free and legal.(We do not guarantee that, just saying that one would hope he did his research.)  There are not just Linux books there but some subversion, python and other books.
