Symbian Goes Open Source

Since the weather outside doesn’t really condone anything but sitting in front of a computer, the snow drifts are rather insane right now, I figured I would catch up on some reading.  While perusing through my list of RSS feeds, I found this story from Linux Journal, about Symbian opening up all their source code and going open source.  It seems that some of the packages that Symbian previously used were already open source, but now you can download all 108 packages directly from the Symbian Developer Community site.

From doing some further research, it appears that Symbian holds the Global market share for smartphone OSes. So, will opening up the Symbian OS push them further ahead of everyone else in the market?
