Are you an oprotunistic developer?

Jono Bacon, Community Manager at Ubuntu, has assembled a nice article about what one needs to write the quick and scratch your own itch applications Linux and FLOSS are known for without a lot of hassle.  The concept hearkens back to the good old days of Unix when apps were focused on doing one task and doing it well.  His article is a great getting started guide to help you easily find the parts you will need.  Check it out.

Will the addition of proprietary software in distros hurt free software?

I found an interesting article today on the Linux Magazine site.  Christopher Smart talks about proprietary software being offered by Canonical, and utilizing it within Ubuntu.  This article point brings to light some very good questions and I am sure can be seen by both sides.  Those who are die hard, free software evangelists will not care for what Canonical is trying to accomplish.  While those who feel that proprietary software does have a place in Linux, will be opening their wallets to install software like Photoshop right into their distros.

Give the article a read and let us know how you feel.  Are you on the side of keeping all software within your distro open and free, or will you be installing some proprietary applications into your distro?

Shuttleworth to step down but not leave Ubuntu...

Mark Shuttleworth the founder and the voice behind Ubuntu will step down as the CEO of Canonical turning over the reigns to Jane Silber the current COO.  Mr. Shuttleworth will not be leaving the company but moving to focus on his passions and let Jane Silber focus on the commercial enterprise.  The article found here explains that he will be linux Linus is for the Kernel.  He will focus on being technical and design issues.  This should allow the company to become more commercial and still maintain the community focus as it has in the past.  So I now expect to see more stuff about using Ubuntu on corporate front. This has been an area they haven't been able to make significant strides into against the incumbents of Red Hat and Novell.  Should be interesting to watch.
