Ever wondered how Facebook handles half a billion people a month?

Check out this other keynote from OSCON by David Recordon.  Who is David? From his Bio on his Web Site.

"David Recordon is the Senior Open Programs Manager at Facebook, where he leads open source and open standards initiatives. He joined Facebook from Six Apart where he focused on platform strategies, and previously worked at VeriSign in the emerging business group. David has played a pivotal role in the development and popularization of key social media technologies, such as OpenID and OAuth."

It's pretty high level but the numbers are impressive.  Today they are taking in between 80 and 90 TB of data a day.  In 2008 they only took in about 1.2 TB.  Check it out for a cool insight that isn't focused on the privacy issues they are dealing with but the real nuts and bolts technology and how most of it, if not all of it, is Open Source.  On the Facebook Web Site there is even a whole page dedicated to the Open Source they use, support, created and released.

Linux is gaining on the desktop and owns HPC market...

DesktopLinux.com has a nice article covering several reports detailing the penetration Linux has in various areas. The article gives a nice rundown area by area.  What surprised me the most was that of the top 500 High Performance Computers Linux ran on 471.  I am pretty sure that Windows didn't run on any.  The other cool fact that came out is that Linux has now managed to achieve a little more than 1% of the total desktop market.  The full percentages break down like this:

"Linux server revenue share grew to 16.8 percent, says IDC, and Linux is now running on 91 percent of the 500 fastest supercomputers."

Very cool to see things moving forward at such steady pace.  Check out the article and amaze your friends with a fresh set of stats.

Check out this list of 7 great CMS tools...

CMS or Content Management Tools are plentiful on the net.  The people who have used and customized them always seem to have their favorites.  This short list from junauza.com introduces you to a few of the top players.  While the article says they are the 7 Best CMS tools I am pretty sure that developers of other tools not on the list would disagree.  Don't forget also that none of these are completely ready to go out of the box and some level of customization is required.  How much varies across the tools.  The general rule is the more flexibility  the more you will need to do to get it set correctly.  It's one of the amazing things about the world of Open Source.  So many options and so many opinions about them.

Doing security right doesn't have to be expensive....

I found this article over on the Datamation Blog that lists 50 great opensource and freeware security solutions.  It's an impressive list of tools that fill almost every security need you might have.  One of the cool things about the article is that they tell you what the software is a possible replacement for.  The tools on the list are at varying levels of maturity so be sure to do more research before replacing a key piece of your security infrastructure with them.
