Open Source and the Corporate world....

Over the last couple of weeks, when I can find a news story not from CES, there has been a lot written about Open Source and the Corporate World.  Two articles I found interesting that were about FOSS businesses.  The first is over at the Register and talks about going after business models and markets in decline.  It gives some great points about both companies that will be successful in the future and some that seem to be headed for danger.  The second article is a bit longer and tries to explain why Open Source Advocates may not always understand corporate America as well as we do here at linuxinstall.net.  The article makes several good points but seems to be trying to inflame people in Open Source.  It's a good read and makes you really think about what you are reading across the web.

5 thing for and 5 things against NoSQL databases...

We have been hearing a lot about NoSQL databases over the last couple of years.  If you are curious about what the good and bad things about them who better to ask than the nice folks over at Database Journal.  They wrote a great article that should help you get started on your path to determinng whether NoSQL databases are right for your next project.  There were several other links on the page pointing to deeper discussions on the topic of NoSQL databases.  It's a very balanced and well thought out article worth the time to read.

Open Source Forking is a Feature Acording to Linus...

Anil Dash wrote a pretty awesome story over at his blog called "Forking is a Feature".  His point is that people like Linux Torvalds have taken what used to be seen as a flaw and made it a feature.  Here is a sample of some of the examples in the article:

"Still, forks have had important consequences. Firefox (earlier Firebird and Phoenix) was originally a fork of Mozilla, the open source browser that had been mired in indecision for half a decade. WordPress was born as a fork of B2, a neglected early blogging tool."

The article is a great read and can help you when debating whether your company should do more with Open Source software.

What is your favorite forked product?
