Novell has finally been purchased.

Yes, after a lot of talk and several different possibilities of buyers, VMWare would of been a very interesting one, Attachmate has bought Novell for $2.2 billion dollars.  The story I read over at Dekstoplinux.com gives all the details.

It sounds like the deal will not be completed until the first quarter of 2011, but it should be interesting to see what happens with SLES and OpenSuse.

Another interesting note is that Microsoft somehow is in on this deal as well, and they are purchasing some Novell intellectual property assets.  I have not seen a listing of what this will include, but remember that Microsoft had to pay Novell back in 2006 for a court settlement in regards to some Unix items.  Another interesting note is that Novell kept the WordPerfect office technology after the product line was sold to Corel.  So it will be very interesting to see who gets all the different pieces that are held by Novell.

We'll keep you posted as to further information as we find out more in this breaking story.
